A Decent History Book anyone?...
Comrades - anyone know of a decent general Irish History book that isn't of a revisionist bent? I want to buy something that will not reflect a pro-brit agenda for a friend who is leaving thses fair shores Go raibh maith agat!

"Outlines in Irish History: Eight Hundred Years of Struggle" by Seamus P. Metress

The Story of the Irish Race by Seumas Mac Manus is a fine read, but it depends on how historical/ detailled you want it. Mac Manus' book isn't inaccurate, as far as I know, but it does read a bit like a collections of stories. Plus it includes the Fin Mc Cool stories, et al. One down side is that I think it ends off around the time of 1920.

"Outlines in Irish History: Eight Hundred Years of Struggle" by Seamus P. Metress That wouldn't be Dr Séamus Metress Ph.D. would it?

Yes, it would.

Go raibh mile maith agaibh mo chairde!

Yes, it would. I have to pick up a copy of that. Thanks Mac!

I would strongly recommend 'Ireland Her Own' by T.A. Jackson (Lawrence & Wishart). It is an outline history of Ireland from a socialist perspective and is very readable.

Yes, it would. I have to pick up a copy of that. Thanks Mac! it is definitely a great resource, he never writes more than a sentence or two on events, but so many things in that book have intrigued me enough to read further on that i would have to say it is one of my favorites. I also have the Story of the Irish Race, but i am embarrased to say i have not read the whole thing, i have sort of picked snippets out of it. It is so very looong you see :D it scares me.

For mid 19th to mid 20th century Irish history I'd recommend Ireland Since The Famine by FSL Lyons. Luckily I can't quite remember the name of the book we had in first year of secondary school it was something like "Ireland in the Middle Ages". This great work mentioned that part of the staple diet of Ireland in the middle ages was the potato. For more modern Irish history I can heartily recommend "Moogie - Portrait of a Republican Hero" by Moogie. In it you can find out all sorts of fascinating facts like did you know that it was actually Moogie who wrote the Proclamation but didn't get to sign it because the pen ran out of ink? The middle pages pull out as a full frontal centrefold too. Sales have been disappointingly slow for some reason. I blame press censorship.
