An Airport in Roscommon?Council gets ‘serious proposals' for airport in South Roscommon
ROSCOMMON COUNTY Council has received a number of "serious proposals" for the development of an airport in South Roscommon. The County Manager indicated at a meeting on the draft County Development Plan 2008-2014 last week that proposals for an airport had been received.
In response to a question regarding the viability of developing an airport in South Roscommon, County Manager John Tiernan indicated that this remained an objective of the County Development Plan.
He added that he had received a number of "serious proposals" regarding the development of an airport in the South Roscommon area, which would support the possibility of such a development.
"A number of proposals have come to me with regard to that (airport) but none have gotten off the ground as of yet," the County Manager said.
"These were serious proposals that would convince me that the business case is there," he added.
According to the draft County Development Plan, the council would examine the feasibility of developing an airport or airstrip in the South Roscommon region on foot of its belief that that Athlone and its environs could present the "ideal location" for an airport.
