suspect you might be thinking of Peter Hart. Must be.

One thing i hate about Joe Cahill was when he stood up at the provo Ard Fheis and said "WE WON THE WAR, LETS WIN THE PEACE" What war was he talking about???

most books on the IRA I see at the library follow the PIRA, is there some good books that deal specifically with CIRA, RIRA, INLA?

Fitz- 09-01-2005

Some of the books mentioned keep the focus on the Provos after the Provos cease to be the IRA, but with alot of others mentioned, it's not an issue. The focus is on the IRA. If you're looking for a modern history that focuses on the post-Provo IRA, let me know if you find one. There is a book that focuses on the RIRA called Black Operations, but I've not read it, so I can't tell you anything about it. Maybe someone else can. There is also one on the INLA called Deadly Divisions, which I also have not read, primarily because Irps dismiss it as rubbish.

There is a book that focuses on the RIRA called Black Operations. My opinion of the book, Black Ops, is that it's a great read story-wise... however for a book that's supposedly focused on historical fact - it features little sources or footnotes, instead relying heavily upon uncredited hearsay. So I suggest reading it for entertainment and the "possibilities" rather than as a reliable source for any sort of fact or truth.

One of the best books on Irish history from a socialist perspective is 'Ireland Her Own' by T.A. Jackson (published by Lawrence and Wishart.

Would agree, Black Operations might be entertaining, but it's NOT AT ALL accurate...

Batman- 09-18-2005

Isnt it a case of thier word against yours? How are we supposed to know the real truth?

Vaclav- 09-18-2005

How indeed? I recommend 'Borstal Boy' by Brendan Behan. Lots of info about Irish history and the 30's campaigns, and an unbelievably good read. (It's a novel btw)

borderfox- 11-22-2005

There was a book written by brendan behan after borstal boy called confessions of an Irish rebel I've yet to read i cant get my hands on it at all

I just finished Tirghra, a book of the 364 men, women, boys and girls who gave their lives for Irish Freedom, Not technally a book but I knew dozens of these brave oglaigh and after a half bottle of poteen and a walk down memory lane doing guard of honour and marching at a lot of these funerals I felt angry, anger that these oglaigh sacrifices brought us not one step closer to a United Ireland, What a friggin waste, God Bless them all, I for one will never forget their sacrifice nor put labels on them, They were all Irish Soldiers.

Isn't that the collection of the fallen Volunteers? I see those on eBay from time. For Vaclav: I believe Borstal Boy is an Autobiography rather than a novel. For Borderfox: Confessions of an Irish Rebel

Saer Wrote Isn't that the collection of the fallen Volunteers? I see those on eBay from time. Yes it is, it gives a name and face to a lot of our comrades who gave it all. Hard read, but any time you feel down or dejected open this book and turn to any page, That will raise your blood level and vow not to surrender or give in.

Bandit Country by Toby Harnden focuses on South Armagh, a notorious IRA stronghold throughout the Troubles, once touted as "the most dangerous posting in the world for a British soldier"
