Escape from Boyle Barracks during the War of Independence
My grandfather George Meadlarklan was in the Bedfordshire regiment based at Boyle military barracks Co.Roscommon, (known locally as Kings house) during the War of Independence. He is regarded as a hero in our family as he helped a number of high ranking IRA volunteers to escape custody from Boyle barracks in 1921 -22;for this action he was court martialled & sentenced to 12 months imprisonment. He managed to escape from custody & went back to Ireland where he joined the newly formed Irish Free State Army.He settled in Boyle with his wife Winnifred & their 7 daughters until his return to England in 1958.The remaining members of his family would like to recognise his action by way of a plaque or similiar at the site of Boyle barracks;is there any member out there who could advise the appropriate course of action. My grandfather was always proud of what he had done as was his family;we would be grateful for any comments;many thanks, Tony

Maybe The National Graves Association? Or the Roscommon I.R.A Commemoration Committee?

You could always email RSF head office. They're bound to know someone who knows a bit about Republicanism in Roscommon. (says I with a straight face)
