Irish mentality towards GB after famine Hello dear friends,
1)I am a pupil from Germany and have a nice task to fulfill. My job is to write a essay about the Great Irish Famine and its consequences. Subsequently, I've searched a long time for good pieces of information but there is a certain question that can only be answered by Irish. What I would like to know is, how Irish mentality changed towards GB (how was the relationship before and after the famine plus how is the relationship today!!!).
2)My second question is, how mentality changed generally after this hard suffering.
It would be helpful if you might use quotations if possible! What is your opinion and what is the opinion of prominent Irish.
You can also give me advises about how to write a perfect essay!!!

I wonder if it could really be said that the attitude of the average irish person changed towards the British state at all. After all it was only fifty years after 1798. O'Connell had been hugely popular with his repeal of the Union movement. So the Union was already hugely unpopular. You also have to bear in mind that there were nine major famines in Ireland between 1720 and 1860 - so famine was a central part of what it ment to be an Irish person living under British misrule. The famine of 1847/49 was, of course, on a more massive scale, but it is reconed that a half a million died of starvation in the early 1720s, so there was no sudden revelation that the British state wanted the Catholic Irish dead. that had been obvious for a very long time.
I would think that the biggest change of attitude was not to the British state but to Ireland herself. There was a massive loss of confidence in everything Irish - from our language to practically all aspects of Irish life - except the Catholic church, which was not native Irish anyway. People just wanted to get away, and new developments in transport ment that getting to America had never been easier. Our population halved from eight million to four in a couple of decades.
