NEW IRISH LANGUAGE YOUTH STATION LAUNCHES 5th March 2008 A new national Irish-language radio station aimed at young people is now on air. Raidió X was launched on the cricket field of the historic grounds of Trinity College in Dublin on Monday afternoon. 100 young Irish-speakers gathered to create a huge human X on the field as a symbol of the station and to give it an explosive launch. Raidió X broadcasts throughout Ireland 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via its website www.raidiox.com. The station is aimed at the 15-35 year old age-group and will also provide a platform to musicians who sing through Irish. The station has been temporarily called Raidió X. A national competition is currently underway with entrant leaflets being widely distributed throughout the country during Seachtain na Gaeilge. Entries can also be sent in via email to raidio@cnag.ie. The closing date for entries is St. Patrick’s Day 2008. The winner will also receive an iPod Nano for coming up with the best name. Lisa Ní Choisdealbha, Chairwoman of the Radio X working group, said: “This is a historic day as we begin to broadcast the Irish language radio station Raidió X. This station has the greatest potential to advance the promotion and use of Irish amongst young people since the setting up of TG4. I am certain that we will see positive results in the near future.” The working group of Raidió X decided to broadcast firstly online with pre-recorded material. Live programmes will be developed during the summer and well-known faces, along with young talented presenters, will be attracted to the station gradually. Raidió X have engaged the services of Digital Audio Productions, a leading media company in digital entertainment, to provide technical and consultative support for the station.
