Officer hurt by booby-trap bomb
Officer hurt by booby-trap bomb An off-duty police officer has been injured by a booby-trap car bomb in County Tyrone. The explosion happened at Drumnaby Road in Spamount village, outside Castlederg at about 2130 BST on Monday. The officer, a Catholic, suffered serious leg injuries, however, they are not thought to be life-threatening. He was rescued by a member of the public who dragged him from the car wreckage. Dissident republicans are being blamed for the attack. The policeman, who is not stationed in the area, is understood to have been visiting someone. Councillor Derek Hussey, who went to the scene, said the quick thinking of the member of the public saved the man's life. "One of the first on the scene, a civilian, is understood to have opened the car door and taken the occupant out of the car," the UUP representative said. The former MLA praised "the actions and the courage of that particular individual". Secretary of State Shaun Woodward has condemned the attack. "The contrast between the PSNI officer, dedicated to serving the community, and those with no politics, no support and no principles, who carried this cowardly attack could not be clearer," he said. "As Northern Ireland moves towards a new and better future, there remains a tiny minority of contemptible, criminal elements who have been rejected by the people, north and south. "They will not be allowed to stand in the way of progress." The police have been warning for some time that dissident groups have been trying to increase their activities and that they were actively targeting police officers. In November, the Real IRA shot two officers in Londonderry and Dungannon, and in February police mounted a huge security operation across Northern Ireland because of fears that dissidents were planning another shooting or bombing. BBC: "Dissidents" blamed for car attack
Dissidents blamed for car attack Dissident republicans have been blamed for a booby-trap car bomb attack on an off-duty policeman in County Tyrone. The officer, a Catholic, sustained serious, but not life-threatening, leg injuries in the attack on Monday in Spamount village, near Castlederg. Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde said off-duty officers were being targeted because that was when they were at their "most vulnerable". He said dissidents knew they were "in their endgame" and were "lashing out". The explosion happened at Drumnaby Road at about 2130 BST. "They have not defeated the police service for the last 38 years, if they seriously think this sort of event will defeat the Police Service of Northern Ireland they are badly mistaken - I think the communities and the police together can solve this crime," Sir Hugh added. The officer was rescued by a member of the public who dragged him from the wreckage of the car. A short time later the vehicle went on fire. Eye-witness Tommy Sproule said they moved the injured officer a safe distance away from the vehicle. "If we hadn't moved him, he was only about two metres from the boot of the car, his injuries would have been a lot worse than what they were," he said. Northern Ireland's First and Deputy First Minister condemned the attack. Ian Paisley said it was an attack on democracy and that those behind it must be "brought to justice". "My prayers and thoughts are with the policeman and his family at this very difficult time," he said. Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness appealed for anyone with information to assist the police. "The elements within our society who perpetrated this act have nothing to offer, they are without mandate or strategy and represent no one," he said. The Sinn Fein MP for the area Pat Doherty described it as an "absolute outrage". "We have moved on - there is no turning back to the old days," he said. Police have been warning for some time that dissident groups have been trying to increase their activities and that they were actively targeting police officers. In November, the Real IRA shot two officers in Londonderry and Dungannon, and in February police mounted a huge security operation across Northern Ireland because of fears that dissidents were planning another shooting or bombing. Cael- 05-13-2008

So poor old Pat Doherty was wheeled out to condemn the nasty Republicans. This used to be the role of the Stoops.

Ireland- 05-13-2008

Howyis ! Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness appealed for anyone with information to assist the police. The Sinn Fein MP for the area Pat Doherty described it as an "absolute outrage". "We have moved on - there is no turning back to the old days," he said. I bet Marty wishes he could still phone Mo Mowlam - to pass-on info on those responsible , rather than asking her to clear him to pass through a BA checkpoint : sure he's a Brit minister now and those same 'checkpoint-charlie' BA soldiers would be guarding him ! And 'Ten Cars' Doherty should realise that the "old days" ie the Brit military and political presence on this isle , are still festering here . We can't "move on" until they 'Move Out' ! Slan Anois ! Ireland.

BCB- 05-13-2008

I must commend those Volunteers involved. Ireland Unfree Shall Never Be At Peace.

Ireland- 05-13-2008

Howya BCB ! Yeah , same here : it's an operation that I have no problem with . Slan Anois ! Ireland.

McGuinness visits officer injured in bomb attack
www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk McGuinness visits officer injured in bomb attack By Claire Weir Martin McGuinness has paid a hospital visit to the Catholic police officer injured in a bomb attack. The Deputy First Minister called at the bedside of the officer — who suffered serious leg injuries when a bomb blew up under his car on Monday night. A spokesman for Mr McGuinness today confirmed that a visit had taken place at Altnagelvin Hospital but would not elaborate. He said: "It was a private matter." The former IRA chief's move came as condemnation continued to grow following the attack at Spamount, near Castlederg, which is being blamed on dissident republicans. A top ranking policewoman has said the officer, believed to be from Omagh, could have been killed if members of the public had not intervened and dragged him from the flaming vehicle. Assistant Chief Constable Judith Gillespie added that it was too early to say which dissident grouping had planted the under-car device. ACC Gillespie said that when she visited her colleague in hospital, he had seemed in "good spirits" but had very serious leg injuries following the explosion. "He was based in Enniskillen and was on his way to perform night duty in Enniskillen. Nobody should be attacked in this way," she said. "He has serious leg injuries and will take some time to recover. He has had surgery and it is expected that he will make a full recovery. "He is in good spirits but he needs rest and care and our thoughts are with him and his family. He will be affected both physically and mentally but he is very determined to get back to work." ACC Gillespie said that the PSNI will be working hard to develop intelligence surrounding such attacks. "These incidents have been happening throughout the province and we will not in any way be deterred from our duties. The Chief Constable has already stated that dissident republicans have the capacity to mount attacks, " she said. She added that security is kept in constant review and, while it was too early to say how and where the bomb was attached to the car, she confirmed that it was an under-car type device. ACC Gillespie said the PSNI would continue to protect the streets in a high-profile and visible manner and would not be retreating behind walls. She also thanked those who helped pull the officer from the car. "I shudder to think what might have happened, he had a very, very fortunate escape. The car he was in was absolutely gutted and chances are that if he hadn't been pulled out he could have been much more seriously hurt or he could have died." One of the first people to arrive on the scene was local man Tommy Sproule who said that he and other members of the public helped move the injured officer a safe distance away from the vehicle, just moments before it erupted in flames. "If we hadn't moved him, he was only about two metres from the boot of the car, his injuries would have been a lot worse than what they were," he said. Mr Sproule said that the officer, whose leg was cut almost to the bone, feared it had been blown off altogether. http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/atex-imports/article3701479.ece © Belfast Telegraph

Re: statement

It was removed, the admin of the board were of the opinion that this poster was nothing more than a mischief maker intent on annoying people, no credibility was given to his claim. One would think that if this gang were going to claim such an operation they would have done it elsewhere, not on a 32CSM bulletin board.

The officer sustained back and leg injuries during the attack in the village of Spamount as he made his way to work in Co Fermanagh on Monday night. The four men were arrested at a number of locations around Co Tyrone. They are being questioned in Antrim police station.

The Provies coming out in force to condemn this attack didn't particularly surprise me; they're as much of a joke as the SDLP in that respect. Overall, a fine assault on the programme of normalisation currently being implemented.
